Re: Propellor Recommendations?
well 5K is what it seems to run, I can double check with another tach, but over the time I've owned it it seem to be accurate especially for timing..etc. I replaced the points with a pertronix setup, and got a coil to match.
The motor is not meant to turn that many RPM's?? We do a alot of running to a city about 15 miles away on the water turning about that, it hasnt blown up or overheated yet, but im trying to prevent that..lol. I bought it from my uncle last year, and he had 2 props, both the same pitch and such. I wasted one last year using a crappy boat launch, plus the damn lake levels were so low, and the rocks so high..

.
He didnt know that much about it, and only used it on small inland lakes so rarely ran up it to what I have been lately. I've basically got a inland sea to ride around on, so I wanted to watch the RPM more carefully, especially when running over longer distances. According to my service manual, the motor's max operating is 5k .. but as with anything is it wise to run it at max for extended periods of time? or should I select a prop with maybe a bit more pitch??
/edit.. interesting, according to this:
http://www.volvo.com/NR/rdonlyres/FDC25472-4DD4-427B-B6D5-6FB29D51027B/0/AQ120B_270D_1978_en.pdf Max RPM IS 5K...but recommended operating RPM is 4400 to 4800.. If this truly is the case, perhaps a prop with a bit more pitch would be better. However I will verify the 5K with a different tach, but I can tell you the beasty sure screams that is for sure, my guess would be its running 5K.
However It seems to not pull that many RPM's when loaded down, and pulling the tube. maybe like 6 people in boat one on tube? .. like max RPM of 4500 ish. It seems to have a little trouble planing out too in this scenario, unless you have someone go sit on the bow..lol. I would wonder if a different prop would help in this, as this seems to be the way the boat is used more than anything.
