I have a 4.3 v6 merccruiser and i see in the manual that the idle should be around 650 but when you put it in forward your it sounds really loud when engaging the prop. Am i reading the manual wrong or should i put idle back to around 100

Re: proper idle rpm

After the engine is warm,in gear, rpm's should be around 600 to 650.

Im not even close to being a mechanic, but This thread for a 3.0L suggests about 650. My volvo 4.3 is around 650. I imagine 650 would be correct for yours too.

Re: proper idle rpm

650 is correct for the 4.3 You say it is really loud going into gear, if you are talking about a clunking noise, this is normal and no cause for concern
