proper pitch

I have a 17' fiberglass that I am repowering from a 115 Hp to a 65 Hp (115 Hp went up). I accquired a 1972 Evinrude 65 Hp but it does not have a propeller and I am wondering what the best diameter/pitch combination would be for maximum efficiency.

What do you want to bet that the 65 uses twice the fuel the 115 did????

Start with the prop you have. It will, most likely, be too much pitch - depending on how your V4 was set up - but its a start. Once you get your baseline rpm you can calculate the proper pitch from there.

Good luck!

I would say a good place to start would be a 10 X 11" pitch for that size boat with the 65 HP. That's for a 16'-17' BOATS - ALL LOADS. Then get a Tach and check your top end RPM's and go from there.

I knew my gas consumption would skyrocket, but it was more of a budget decision (dropping HP) to just be able to get the boat back in the water.
