Does any one know where there are vids/pics of what points should/should not look like. I hear terms like "worn out", "burnt up" when referring to points, but as a newbie, I have no real frame of reference. Would like to know what is good/correct when the time comes to change the points on my 1966 33 hp Johnson. Many thanks to all.

Re: proper point appearance

First and foremost, they should NOT be greasy or oil fouled--the most common problems.

Beyond that, new unused points or those that you have cleaned, should be shiny bright, smooth metal, just barely convex. Once they are used, a frosty appearance will develop at the point of contact. Once that frosty area has spread across the face and pits and bumps appear, it is time for replacement or major surgery.

If points aren't just burned up, then you can polish the surfaces with narrow strips of fine emory cloth until shiny and mirror smooth, re-install, re-gap and you're good to go for a while. It's easier to polish points if you remove them from the motor. I chuck mine in a vise and drag the strips of emory cloth or crocus cloth between them until shiny and smooth. It's a real easy thing to do. Good Luck!
