I have a 91 60HP Johnson with elec start and would like to verify the starting procedure?

1) press bulb till firm (does this need to be done when the motor is "warm" as well?)

2) Push button to start and push button to choke as necessary (i heard you are not supposed to choke a "warm" engine) If I stop to fish for an hour, is that still classify as being "warm"?

I am having troubles starting sometimes, my bulb is NOT staying firm... Is this a problem? cause? Can I flood the engine by over pumping?

Thanks

Re: Proper procedure for starting electric start motor?

The bulb is to deliver fuel to the upper fuel line and doesn't need to stay real firm as the fuel is drawn into the motor by vaccuum. Don't sqeeze it too much or it will flood. Once primed, you shouldn't need to squeeze anymore unless the engine is off for hours.
You only need to choke when cold, (Not started for at least a few hours) and yes, you will most likely flood it if you choke and prime when it's been running earlier.Use the fast idle lever if you have one and set it at about 1/4 until it is running well then back off.

Tom,

Cold Engine.

1. Squezze primer bulb until firm.

2. Lift warm up lever about 1/3.

3. Turn key on (not start) and push in-hold for an eight count.

4. Release holding key in-crank engine. You may have to bump the key (push in) to keep engine running.

Warm Engine.

1. Turn key-do not prime.

2. If that does not work, lift warm up lever about 1/3 and crank engine. You may have to bump key (push in) to prime.
