ok i give up looking for a past answer to my problem, so here goes.

I have a 25 hp merc, fish camp model ,tiller steer,no clue what year, no serial plate anywhere
on the motor.
possibly 80's according to the seloc manual, i have the type J carb
TILLOTSON #BC1B,,,,this is the first enrichment type carb i have ever
had the misfortune to work with.what is the proper way to start this motor?

the motor has very good compression, hard to pull for a 71 year old man.
of course i have started it,and it takes 7 to 8 pulls to finally start, by then
i am damn near dead.it starts easier in forward gear, but thats not too smart.

these seloc manuals leave a lot to be desired.

any help would really be appreciated

Clint ---

Does this motor have a twist grip tiller handle that shifts it from forward/neutral/ reverse? With cables?
Why are you missing your fuel filter?
By the way. Buy, ONLY a OEM Merc manual. If you want to diagnose. a problem pertaining to a certain motor.

yes it is tiller F.N.R, the carb has the enrichment valve.
my filter is waiting to be put inline-lol
also has the kill switch on the tiller side of the motor--just below the cowling

gas tank is clean,,,,

would love to buy an oem manual,,,,there is no plate on the motor, typical
i asked a year ago and no one could tell me what motor i have, merc seems to like making 8000 25 hp motors each one is different every 2 months.
i probably have a one of a kind motor,,,,, wouldn't put it past them.

Re: proper procedure --starting

There is a serial number on the block. Not sure where it is, forgot.??? maybe someone will chime in. I will be going away for a few days. is there slop in the shift cables?
They play an important part in starting.
I'll check My manual when I'm at the cottage.
By the way where are you located?

Re: proper procedure --starting

the shift cables, cam, and shift arm are on the starboard side of the motor
toward the rear,no slack to be seen, everything seems tight, shifting is
easy, and as it should be.
my problem is with the enrichment carb,,,,i have started it with the lever
all the way down, then turn counter clockwise, to a fast idle, after about
8 to 10 pulls, this is not an easy little motor to pull start, course im getting old.
I am a retired small equipment and tool repair business owner,i have pull started
damn near every engine made-2 and 4 stroke,THAT HAD A NORMAL CHOKE
OR A PRIMER BUTTON,,this enrichment valve throws me,i hold the valve down
and pump the primer bulb,,,,nothing happens.
of course if i want to start it easily i would just prime it with some carb cleaner
problem solved.I also note all the carb parts i would like to get are obsolete.
by the way the closest i can come to identifying the motor is by the carb, breakdown photos it crosses over to #5705532 to 6416712, an 80/81
25 merc, so there you have it.

thanks

Re: proper procedure --starting

Don't prime it with carb cleaner. Use a spray bottle with oil/gas mix. The cleaner has no oil in it...

As for the starting procedure, this is from another thread and if I recall correctly this was for the I6's with the enricher valve. It's the engine I have but the information may be relevant since they both have the enrichers.

You do not have an old butterfly type choke. You have an enrichner and that is what you hear clicking. When starting the motor the first time for the day, turn the key on and push the key in and hold it for 8-10 seconds, then start the motor bumping the choke as needed until it idles smoothly.

Mine wouldn't start either and I think it was because I was using it as a choke. The PO did this procedure w/o me paying attention so when I got it home I couldn't start it. Using this, it starts.

That being said, mine dumps fuel into the crankcase. From that picture I'm not sure what yours is doing. Worth a shot though. Worst thing, you flood it.

Edit: The clicking mentioned is from the solenoid enricher valve, they remoted it to be operated from the key. When he's talking about holding in the key, it's the equivalent of holding down your button.

Re: proper procedure --starting

well i have rebuilt many many 2 stroke motors in my business over the years
i have used the premix in the squirt bottle, that works too.but it has the tendency to be able to flood the motor if too much is used.
carb cleaner eliminates completely the flooding problem,so one doesn't have
to go to the trouble to un-flood the motor,,,,tried and true for 20 some odd
years.
I have seen enrichment type carbs that when you push the button simply
unloads the float so gas will get into the venturi of the carb.
this carb i have has a small valve on the top right of the carb, when depressed
no fuel can be seen going in the venturi of the carb.since none of the staring
procedure's for this motor are electrical, hence (no clicking) and no key to turn on.I understand what he was saying manual vs electric.

i guess my conclusion is,,,,i have a very hard to start obsolete (as of 6 months from the day of manufacture) motor. that is typical mercury engineering.

thank all of you for your support

no serial number anywhere on the motor, or mounting bracket
