Just bought an '83 Evenrude 35 horse with remote steering attempting to push a '16 Pacific Mariner fishing boat. It only gets it to about 7 MPH; doesn't plane. Motor starts and runs well. At that rate the fish are faster than I am. The prop appears to be a 10 x 15. I just bought the boat/motor. Former owner said went about 24 MPH for him. Is the prop the wrong pitch? Is motor too small? Did I get the shaft? Rookie Salmon chaser needs to know!

Thanx in advance...

Howdy, Closerhauled.

To begin to answer your question we need to know what rpm the engine is reaching. It would also help to have an idea of what your boat weighs.

Among the possibilities are:

The engine is only running on one cyl. in spite of "sounding" okay.

You have a spun hub on your prop.

Your prop is too short in pitch.

Your boat is too heavy for your engine.

Either the carb or the ignition, or both are not reaching wide open position.

If your seller was telling the truth (not at all guaranteed) the most likely is that your engine has dropped a cylinder. More likely, your seller withheld important information from you.

Let us know. :)
