Suggestions for the right size tunnel on an 1860 aluminum jon boat. I want it as an option to raise my prop's running height for shallower water.

The guys at the boat shop told me their dimensions are 32L x 16W x 4H (inches) with the top corners coming in a bit. They stated that anything taller would result in handling probems.

This height seems almost insignificant to me, resulting in very little gain in prop clearance.

Is this stability issue BS?

Is there anyone out there that has an 1860 tunnel jon with a bigger tunnel that has problems?

I have seen an Alumaweld with a 7" height so I know there out there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, FurDuksNFish

Re: Proper tunnel hull size...

Not sure about depth of tunnel. Probably depends on how the boat/motor mate up and the waterline when at rest and planing. I'd have to assume the manufacturer tried various sizes and shaped when the boat was designed. Probably took various loads and motors too.
Setting the motor back further can also help get more water to the prop, consider a jack plate.
For Shallow water running you might consider a Jet drive.
Mud motors such as Go devil, Mudbuddy and Beavertail will run in very skinny water. I hav a 16 HP that pushes my 1960 about 12 MPH in water 3-4 inches deep. Many guys run 25 horse and these days you can get upto 75HP.

Thanks ISki,

CMC jack plate is already in the works. Just thought someone might have some expirience with the bigger tunnels I have seen. The Go-Devils and the like are nice for duck runs but my boat is serving a dual role for bay fishing so I prefer a traditional O/B. I save the piroque for the super shallows once the 1860 has gone as far as it can.
