Hello gentleman, can anyone advise on the appropriate means, chemically speaking, to make Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide catalyst inert. Can your provide any info regarding a safe means for this process absent a lab? I receive a new bottle with every gallon of polyester resin purchased but only use minimal amounts of the bottle.

How can i get convert this chemical into an inert state. I do not want to take the route of "just stir into resin". Not wanting to go that route, I need every ounce of resin that I have purchased and certainly cannot afford to throw away a half gallon.

I have read that sodium hydroxide can be mixed with the MEKP converting the chemical into salts that can be disposed of in the landfill. Where in the name of 'ted' would I purchase sodium hydroxide without the Feds radars going off? lol

any suggestions?

ANY chemists aboard...i understand the difference between covalent and ionic bonds, electronegativity, and atomic mass but any deeper than that an I am 'wading'

I'm no Chemist, but I found this and it says Soda ash will neutralize it and then you can Burn it or bury it.

I am also curious about why you have so much left over. Usually the MEKP that's included with the Resin is not that much more than is required. What is your mix ratio by volume. 1.5 - 2.0% is normal. That would require approx. 38 cc's of MEKP to catalyze a gallon of resin. So how much does your supplier send per gallon of resin? If you don't mind me asking.

Why not just give it away to your local boat repair place ?
