On my OMC outdrive the lower unit is eroding away near the prop and looks like i will have to have it replaced soon.. what is the average cost for this type project to have it done with all the extras (gaskets lube bearings ect..) and also if my current prop is Stainless and beat to hell, should i replace it ASAP or wait till the seasons over and with what type should i replace with...? thanks

if you mean that the gear case is getting Galvanic corrosion and eating the metal it means that you Zincs which should be protecting the drive are used up or you have some type of condition that is beyond what they can control

i dont if a system like the merccathode that uses a small amount of battery power to provide extra protection will work on and omc drive

if the drive is being eaten up the same thing wil happen to a new one unless the cause is fixed

tommays

Re: props and outdrives

i'm going through the same thing with my merc outdrive. I know just the lower unit casing is around $1000 new, then there's the labor of transferring the guts from the old to the new. I have no idea on costs related to omc drives but i'd guess it's about the same.

if the boat sits in the water all season, the worst thing is having a stainless prop on. Buy an aluminum one and have that on there most of the time if you can.

i've also been told that if the boat is moored or docked in tidal water to leave it in gear so the prop doesn't turn with the tide, to help reduce lower unit wear (and possibly corrosion).

from my experience over the years, the zincs you buy at the marine stores (camp and martyr) are garbage. They don't rot away like they're supposed to, instead your drive does. And the effect is worse when you have a stainless prop. Spend the money and stick with the omc zincs, or the mercury/quicksilver zincs; they should feel very light compared to the other zincs.

Replace with aluminum prop and check all zincs before the metal fails on you.You can probably get whatever half you need on ebay pretty reasonable.I got a good alpha upper with ujoints complete for under $450.Charlie
