Hi What66,
Take your existing seal, and possibly the rear carrier and propshaft, with you to a bearing supply house like Kaman Bearing. They can mic it up for you and get you the right seal by dimension. Thickness isn't as important as the ID and OD of the seal, so as long as it fits the casing and shaft - go for it!
- Scott

Re: propshaft seal 1951 hp evinrude

I had this problem with my Johnson, the propshaft seal that you get if you quote the part number (in my case at least) is different!
The inner diameter was correct but the OD was smaller than the original, I checked all the lists I could find of available OMC seals and couldn't find anything that was correct, so I turned up an aluminium sleeve for my seal. I made the ID a few thousandths of an inch smaller than the OD of the seal, heated it so it expanded, then dropped the seal into the middle and let the sleeve shrink onto the seal casing. It works fine, in fact it's better than the original because the metal shield of the new seal is a closer fit to the shaft than the old one, so there's less chance that fishing line can get in there and cut the rubber seal as had happened with the old one.
I smeared a bit of liquid gasket round the outside before pressing it into the seat, just to be sure it wouldn't go anywhere.
