All,

I have a '69 Evinrude 85HP model 85993E and have purchased a new ignition amplifier. Since these are very expensive and seem to fail frequently, I'd like to find out what I can monitor to prolong it's life.

I've read posts about a few things to look for, such as ensuring 12.6? volts in the charging system. For this, I thought of installing a voltmeter.

What else can cause the amplifier (power pack) to die?

Thanks,
Ed Freshwater

Loose or dirty battery connections. ON both the engine or the batter.

TMD

Re: Protecting the amplifier (power pack)

TMD,

I noticed that the battery cables were getting hot when cranking and they were quite rusty so I replaced them. That should help. Do I need 12+ volts going into the amplifier? I also understand that a bad alternator and ultimately a bad battery (causing <12V) will kill the amp. Anything else? They sure are expensive.

If the only thing that can kill then is <12V, then a voltmeter at the helm will help.

EdF

Re: Protecting the amplifier (power pack)

Hi Ed
I do not have a 100% sure fire answer, and I don't think anyone else will either. Along with the good advice of TMD, make annual inspections and tests of the entire electrical system. Pay special attention to the wiring harness. Make sure all wires are good and all connections are clean and tight. Properly install a battery disconnect switch. Cut of the batt when not in use. Remove the batt during storage or long lay-ups. Do not hay wire anything into the system. Make sure all accessories are neatly and corectly wired and are compatable. All this really isn't anything profound. It's just the way things should be done anyway. After all this, pray a little. Sometimes the darn things fail anyway.
