I went to check on my lower unit oil tonite and found that it has turned brown from the original green colour[Mercury Synthetic] new in the month of April and also discovered a small crack on
the top of the lower unit where the prop is recessed into the casing, [sorry dont know the part name] The crack is about an inch long and appears to be on the surface.
My questions are

1] Is the lower unit repairable by welding the crack?

2]The oil leaks out around the prop shaft when I went to top it up, are the seals gone ?

After use the lower unit feels pretty warm to the touch.

Please help me go the right way on this thanks for your help

Re: prov 150 oil leak

stop using it please(further damage to internals)

1- maybe, not a yamaha approved method.
2-seals are gone pressure test will prove it.
sounds like its already been killed so take your lower unit off and drain completly then put in suitable storage location(save for parts. then buy a reconditioned or slightly used lower unit and install. then take your time and rebuild the original correctly. you'll always have a spare
to use in case somthing happens(always happens)

Welding the crack is at best a temorary solution. Replacing the seals likely will fall into the same catergory. Replacing the housing and rebuilding or replacing the gear case are the best solutions. Usually replacing the gearcase with a new or reconditioned one is the most practical and economical solution. The labor to build a corroded unit can easily get out of hand.
