I have a "new to me" 95 90HP salt water Evinrude. She ran "like a top" once I got her going after sitting for a couple years. Had her out three times and burned thru a tank and a half fuel. Developed a chirping noise in the control box. It was suggested that I put 50:1 in the fuel until I figured why the chirp is there. Sounded good to me so, I put the necessary oil in the fuel. Today, after replacing the worning horn, she wouldn't idel. After numerous attempts got her to idel, but everytime I put her in gear she died. After about another 1/2 hour "trying" got her to the point where I could get her run "at speed", after "stumbling" a bit, but that only lasted five minutes. Then she just wouldn't run once I put her in gear. When ideling She'd give a puff of blue smoke and rev up for a second or two then go back to a half harted idel. Had the wrong plugs. Had QL82YC and learned I need QL78YC which I have now. Drained the tank and got some black sludge out that looked like "black water" under the fuel. Tried to get it all but not sure.
Tank is now full of new fuel, new plugs and she still puff's a blue smoke ball and the engine rev's for a second or two then goes back, where she was.
Does it sound like a fuel/oil problem? Now that I have new fuel and plugs I'm trying her again in the morning to see if she'll get me shrimping. If not she's going in the shop. At $75 an hour, was hoping to fix her myself, on a retired budget.... Thanks for any thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!! Ron

Hello
well if you found sludge try draining/rebuilding the carbs. if it got that watery goo in the fuel bowl the only way to get it out is flush it or pull the carbs and overhaul. after sitting that long I would overhaul them anyway:) :) good luck and keep posting

Thanks rodbolt
Not knowing a lot about this (yet), do I need to get a "rebuild kit" from the local dealer to do that? or can I reuse the same gaskets etc. and just clean out the sludge? I have rebuilt carbs for cars back in the 60's, is it about the same??? Thanks

I checked out the page you sent and see a place to order a "clymer" shop manuel. I don't think that is what I want, or is it? I believe that is like the "Chilton's" for cars, right? Thanks

Re: Puff of blue smoke and the engine rev's

Thanks Rick
I just sent them a check this morning for the parts and shop manuals. Tried to get back out yesterday and she ran great for about 2-3 minutes then quit. Had the bow up and think crud in the gastank choked her out again. Wouldn't run, once I put her in gear. I know I have a fuel problem. I did the best I could cleaning the tank, but guess it wasn't enough!!! Took her to the locak dealer and they are going to "fix" her. I just need her running so I can back out before the shrimping season closes.
Is there a way I could have flushed the carb bowls without taking het to the shop?? Thanks

Hello
do you have a fuel water seperator? if not get one. after the carbs are done try running on a 6 gallon remote tank. sometimes fuel tank draw tubes have a small screen mesh filter in them that like to clog. couple that with a sticky anti-siphon valve and you get idle speed only. I did a job a few weeks ago that I found an insect body in the fuel line between the tank and the water seperator. would suck up against the fitting and shut off the fuel. took 20 min to determine it was a fuel draw problem with a standard vacum gauge. took 3 more hours to find the stupid bug:) :)
Good luck and keep posting
people that design boats should be forced to work on them 10 years later :)
