Hi folks. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with pulling engines out of an I/O? I've got the shop manual, it says I need to take the outdrive off and pull the engine and outdrive bellhousing out as one unit. It looks to me like I could disconnect the engine from the outdrive bellhousing and pull the engine out alone. It would sure save a lot of work to be able to pull just the engine. Anyone know?

John,

Not sure what kind of boat it is, but I just pulled the 3.0 out of my 1988 bayliner this past fall. Here's a quick overview of what I did.

1. Disconnect wires at the battery or turn the switch to 'off' if you have one.
2. DIsconnect all wires from engine, and label them or draw a diagram.
3. If it's fresh waret cooled with a heat exchanger, disconnect all water lines from heat exchanger and remove.
4. Disconnect fuel line from tank to fuel pump and plug it.
5. Disconnect throttle (what I did was remove the entire assembly where the throttle and shift cables attach to the engine.)
6. Remove the two nuts on the sides of the bellhousing.
7. Remove the two lag bolts that hold the front mount to the bay floor.
Attach th elift and get the engine off the floor about 1/4 inch.
8. Slide the engine forward to disengage the outdrive shaft from the coupler, then lift the engine out the rest of the way.

You might want to pull the outdrive too, since you're likely going to have to realign the engine when reinstalling, but it wasn't necessary for me when removing the engine. I am pulling the outdrive to do an alignment when reinstalling the engine as I only want to have to do this once this year! :)

Hope I didn't miss anything. Just use common sense and take your time, it's pretty simple.

...about removing the engine from the bellhousing and doing it that way...

it will be easy coming out, but lining the shaft back into the coupler on the reinstall might be trouble. I haven't gotten there myself yet but from the looks of things on my setup at least it would be tough.

Thanks Steve. The boat is a 16.5' Sea Ray.

I wasn't sure if there was a splined shaft or if something bolted up inside the bell housing. What would beed to be aligned? It seems like once the bell housing bolts would line everything up. Is there something inside outdrive that needs to be aligned?

I'm not sure if I'm going to need to pull the engine or not. I've got what sounds like lifter noise, but it's coming from the cam shaft area. Hopefully it's a collapsed lifter or something simple.

Take pictures!!!!!!!!!! From all sides and top and bottom!! It is so easy to forget just how that one of twenty different brackets went back on. After everything has been repainted, forget about it. Getting the motor out with to drive still on would be easy enough. Like you said “slide it forward”. Getting the motor back in is a whole nother story. I take it that you are using the same motor (after repairs) as long as you don't mess with the motor mounts (adjustment wise) it should be right on (alignment wise). The problem is when you are putting the motor back in. To get the coupler and the drives shaft to line up right is almost impossible. Before the motor is sitting in its original spot you will be putting all kinds off pressure on the shaft and coupler (probably scaring the coupler or worse screwing up a U joint or gear in the drive). Do your self a favor and take off the drive and that is from someone would not do it if he thought there was a better way even if it was in the book.

John Boelte; I you haven't already done this job, I suggest you do as Bondo says, by the book! I've been at this a long time and I'm telling you, shortcuts come from a whole lot of experience. If you haven't got a lot of the latter, better leave the former alone; it's big trouble. Lining up the spline can be tough for a seasoned mechanic. Just follow the book

Thanks guys. If it turns out I do need to pull the engine, I'll do it by the book.
