Pull cord for 1974 johnson 4hp???

my brother has a 1974 johnson 4hp motor, and the pull cord broke. he took it all off and the re-coil sprung out at him and he need a new one, is there a new re-coil and cord to buy around.

The spring can be rewound, gloomis, but it is a difficult (and dangerous) job.

If you don't have an OEM Service Manual, check with your local library. It has instructions.

When the rope breaks, it usually wrecks the spring from the backlash as it goes flying back. Try straightening it out and it will usually break just when you don't want it to.

Any Evinrude or Johnson dealer can fix you up with the parts, or repair it for you. It can be done without the special spring winding tool, but certainly is easier if you have the tool.
