Pull Cord Wont Always Retract on 2009 Tohatsu 3.5HP 4 Stroke

The pull cord on my 2009 Tohatsu 3.5HP 4 Stroke wont always retract after being pulled. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't. To get it to retract I have to gently tug and play a bit of gentle tug of war until it zips back. Advice and best plan of attack please? Thanks!!!

I've heard the Tohatsu is a good motor. What's your opinion of it?

I'd bet your Clock Spring needs to be cleaned!
Seriously, that Spring can't have any Oil or it'll collect dirt. That makes the Coils stick together.
But...your gonna take it all apart and clean it. Then you'll find whatever that bind is.

Thanks. I think they are great motors and if you need to replace a part the parts are reasonably priced and easy to find. Ive owned Yamaha motors as well and I really think the Tohatsu are just as good but Tohatsu motors are more economical to maintain and repair if need be. However to be fair Ive never owned a motor larger than 6HP. Thanks for replying to my post.
