Re: PULL FLY WHEEL

Hey Rob I'm in Mobile also and will keep an eye open. Going to see someone this weekend that might have one. If I find one I will let you know and you will be welcome to borrow it.

- Nick

My wife works at a NAPA/Mack truck parts store, they have the thin walled socket you need. If you have a big truck parts store there try them.

Robert,There are sockets that fit,I used to borrow one.I think it was made by Bonney.I finally ground down my own socket until it fit,and it works great.
DHP

Re: PULL FLY WHEEL

I didn't figure a NAPA alone would have it. It's going to take a Big truck parts store, MACK, Peterbuilt, Kenworth, etc.., that kind of parts place will have it,, if you can't borrow one - I know that's a lot cheaper.

Re: PULL FLY WHEEL

Here's where thing's can get expensive for the do'it youself mechanic, A 1-7/16 socket comes in 3/4 in. drive. For most people this mean's a 3/4 - 1/2 in. reducer. When going above 1/2 in. drive, these socket's can get exspensive. I know this won't be much help to a lot of you, but here is how I did it. I got a 1-7/16 craftsman socket with reducer, I cut it down to 1.925 in diameter, for a lenght of .750 from the face of the socket. This was not a problem for me as I have a lathe. This is a hard guestion to answer for the person who would have only ocassional use for a tool like this. The socket, and reducer, unless you have a 3/4 in. breaker bar will probably run in the $50.00 range. Maybe I should go into the socket alteration work.Unless you have one, add the price of the breaker bar, plus the price of a torgue wrench to put that nut back on. Unless you are going to do a lot of work with your engine, I know these cost's are hard to justify.

Re: PULL FLY WHEEL

Just for the heck of it, I checked my Snap-On catalog from 1997. A 1-7/16 socket in 1/2 in. drive list's for $ 31.50, but they have probably went down.

If you've got a vocational school around there, they'd turn one down for ya for free. Well, maybe not free but something affordable.

c/6
Hooty

Re: PULL FLY WHEEL

grind it down on a bench grinder. put a screw driver though it and hold both ends of the screw driver. the socket will spin on the screw driver and grind it pretty true. i know it sound pretty shade tree mechanicish but it works i have dont it a few times. better then spending 30 buxs on a socket u wont use all that much.

Re: PULL FLY WHEEL

hello
my socket is a proto 1-7/16ths. works fine with no mods. course its is rather old but I paid about 22 dollars for it. I guess I could play about at work and measure the wall thickness or get you the part #.
100 bucks is about right.
I grew up in grand bay, my mother still lives in mobile and I graduated from Murphy :)

good luck and keep posting
