I have a 1979 johnson 15 hp. Yesterday I took it out and when I pulled to start it the cord did not retract. I only have about 2 inches to pull to start the motor. Is this difficult to replace?
Thank you in advance.
David

Re: pull start prob

sounds like the recoil spring might be broken. but no it should not be hard to replace.

Don't try it without the Manual. It can be very dangerous if not done EXACTLY right.

Re: pull start prob

I had a problem with my 6hp. we had to replace the black cog, we found that the gut before us changed the bar on the inside for winding it up so we had to make a custom one we found it very hard because the bar kept slipping on the spring. So we cut a groove in the bar and then cut a chunk out inside that groove going sideways for the bit across the centre of the spring to catch on to. it's really hard to explain but even harder to do. The same kind of thing happened with it as what your saying that it didn't recoil.
So if the spring is'nt broken it could be the bar.

P.S. It was very hard to do! but we didn't have a manual.
