1979 Johnson seahorse 4 HP model# 4w79d
I am having a problem with the pull start? I have to pull it all the way out 2 or 3 times till it will catch so that I can start it. Is this an easy fix? I have built many auto motors. But no outboard motors.

Suzuki40

Re: pull start problems?

Hello Middleground,
I think you are misunderstanding me? The motor will start first pull and runs fine.... The pull cord on top will not catch the flywheel so that I can crank the motor untill I fully snap the cord in and out 2 or three times? then it will catch and I can start the motor?

Suzuki40

Re: pull start problems?

I think I need a manual for this one. The gas tank is built into the top of the motor in the back. The lower half of the motor cover drops down to expose the power pack, spark plugs, carb and a list of others. I cant figure out how to remove the top of the motor to get to the cam or spring assembly? Can you replace the whole pullcord spring, cam ect... instead of fixing just one part? Im sure its got to be getting old?

Suzuki40

Your right about getting at it. The motor has been taken care of. It is a fine running and reliable motor. This is really the first problem I have had with it over the last 8 years Im going to try and get to it tomarrow and check that cam you are talking about. Thanks for the help...Im going to bed.

Later,
Suzuki40
