I recently purchased a boat the starter does not want to engage when pulled 2001 Johnson 15 hp model j15rvsic it shifts lockout works but when in neutral does not engage , Am I missing something, Some times it will engage if I shift reverse to forward a number of times but now no.

Friction area for starter spring may need "degreasing".

Sounds like the pawl is damaged or sticking.

(Shifting a number of times probably a red herring)

Remove the whole starter assembly to access the pawl but don't remove the central screw or the spring will escape like a caged tiger ........ nearly as dangerous as a tiger but more difficult to get back in because you cant entice them in with food.
