Pull the trigger on a new nissan/tohatsu?

The best deal I can find on the internet is $1674 for the '05 4stroke 9.9 tohatsu/nissan (with FREE shipping and NO tax). This would be for a 14' aluminum flatbottom. I don't have any experience with 4stroke outboards on a light aluminum boat and I'm a little concerned about vibration. Otherwise, is there anything I'm overlooking here? It seems that the nissan is the lightest (81.5 lbs) and cheapest 4stroke available. I've heard nothing but praise for their reliability. Am I missing anything or should I do it?

It's too much....shop around. And it's a 9.8 hp. The 9.9 was discontinued two years ago.

9.8 is what I meant. I've looked at too many damn motors lately I guess. The absolute lowest I've found now is $1630--free shipping. Are you saying I can do better on a new one and still get free shipping?

The $1630.00 figure is the lowest and is offered by multiple online retailers.

DJ

He's looking for a new, non-heavy, 4-stroke.

DJ, that 9.9 Mercury is the same motor built by Tohatsus. And, that is a used motor +shippng. They need to lower thier price a few $$ to be competive.

That's a two-stroke though. Yater is after a 4.

iboats offers a one year used engine for $1,299.00. Extra protection available, still less than the Tohatsu.

I'd prefer to buy a domestic "badged" brand simply for dealer service convenience, if needed, down the road. But, that's my preference.

Or, a NEW Yamaha for $1,699.00, with a THREE year warranty and plenty of dealers here. Tohatsu can't claim that.

Besides, I like supporting iboats.

Tohatsu didn't make that model Mercury and Tohatsu comes with a three year warranty. Tohatsu does not have as many dealers as Mercury or Yamaha, but they do have more dealers than Honda, Suzuki or Evinrude. It's all relative...

Dont forget to include the cost of the gas to your nearest dealer for its first service. Not much point saving $20 and then having to drive 200.

I should probably keep my keyboard shut and be polite, but this sort of conversation on iboats' board annoys the heck out of me.

Please remember where you are and who is providing this board for you. You are in iboats' store, gentlemen. Please exhibit some courtesy to your host.

Guess reading this thread answers why I never heard anything from my response in your intial thread.

Seems I missed that you decided to go new rather than used and ... o.k. ... I wish you good luck and good boating.

As you've undoubtedly discovered, there are lots of good used engines out there and both good and bad asprcts to both new and used. Like most issues, it seems to come down to cost (not just price) and personal comfort zones.

There is, however, one thing I know of as bad as no choices and that's too many choices. Just do as you are, collect all the info you can, but stay centered on your needs and how you will use this boat. You'll do fine.

Whatever motor I choose will NEVER be serviced by anyone but me.

The tohatsu comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty

I will pick the best deal. I haven't limited my search to this board and it's naive to think that censorship will retain customers--we're talking apples to oranges here...used 2stroke vs new 4stroke--and the nissan/tohatsu is the better deal after shipping costs on the merc

JB While I Agree that respect is required, one of the wonderful things that IBOATS provides is an unbiased view. I suspect that while discussing such topics, Iboats will come out on top anyway while still providing the wonderful service that it does. I would hate to see such discussions censored, and looking back Iboats is often promoted with the context as a great all round place to Buy.

Look at Porta-bote.com I got the Tohatsu 9.8
shipped for $1605 total. I ordered it on a Thursday and it was on my boat the following Wednesday afternoon. This was from California to Indiana. The 4-strokes vibrate a little more than the 2-strokes, but you get used to it. The lack of oily residue is great. All you do is add the oil and go. No need to pay for initial service.
