Pulled the out drive off today to prepare to pull the motor.
everything went well slid right off as its supposed to I look inside
the boot and there is a rusty oily goo inside the drive shaft boot
enough that it started to run out onto the ground.
i checked the gimble bearing and it sounds a little noisy..so i am sure its
due to be changed..
so whats the goo? water thats gotten in there and rusted the bearing?
u joints look and feel great.

Just a guess...I would imagine that your driveshaft bellows (rubber boot) is cracked or torn causing some water intrusion. When you grease your gimball bearing on the starboard side of the bell housing the grease will come out into the bellows when the bearing is full. grease plus water equals some runny, gooey stuff. I'm not a mechanic but that my two cents. If this is true, you'll probably need a new gimbal bearing and drive bellows.

not that much water in there and there was no rust on the u joints at all
I expected to see more rust on the shaft and joints but it was all clean.
does the bellows have to be removed to change the gimball bearing?
I know i could look that up but i am tired.lol

My guess would be gear lube, your drive shaft seal may be worn allowing gear lube to enter the bellows.

Do you have a remote resevoir? Is it low?

No, I used a slide hammer and rear axle bearing puller set borrowed from Autozone, worked fine.

didnt smell like gear lube and shen i took out the top oil screw on the leg it let off a little pressure
so its sealed well enough to hold air.lol

is there a clip that holds it in place or is it just press fit?
i assume this is a nearing that only used in the mercruiser not something that can be found at bearing supply..

There is a seal behind the bearing. Try not to pull that out. When I used the slide hammer and axle bearing tool I accidentally pulled the seal out. It was another $22.

You can get those parts off Iboats, it's good to support our forum with our business. Oh and you will need a gimbal alignment tool, that's the biggest cost item in the whole deal. I got one off e-bay a few years ago.
