Hi all... doing a prop shaft seal on an old 60 horse Jonny hydroelect shift... this lower end has the web-type bearing carrier, where you need to hook a puller in those webs to get it out.
Any tips on the right puller? I see jaw-type gear pullers at Sears, but not sure they will reach in that cavity far enough, don't want to spend cash on the wrong tool.
Also, don't want to chance trying to change those seals without removing the carrier, but if anyone thinks it can be done let me know how it worked out?

thank you

Craig

You can pull it with a harmonic balancer puller and a couple of pieces 1/4" or 5/16" of all-thread rod long enough to reach from the end of the prop shaft up to the inside of the bearing carrier. Bend one end of the all-thread rods into a "J" and hook the bearing carrier with these. Run the other ends of the all-thread through the slots in the puller put a washer and nut on each one and you've got yourself a puller.

c/6
Hooty

After thinking about this for a minute, I realized the bearing carrier may have two drilled and tapped holes for a puller. If it does, use all-thread rod the same size as these holes and then pull it with the harmonic balancer puller. You might even be able to just grab the web in the carrier with a pair of visegrips and pull it out. I've pull 'em out with my fingers before.

c/6
Hooty

Thanks for the suggestions Hooty I will let ya know how it works out!
( PS I don't have the threaded holes in the carrier, so will have to try the J hook idea! )

Craig
