pulley/cable steering help...

I am trying to get my cable/puley steering put together but am having some trouble getting the cable to stay on the drum. I have been following diagram after diagram but none make sense when they are a pic. The written directions are not simple enough for me to understand EXACTLY what to do. Could somebody please help me? Thank you for your time.

duct tape will keep the cable on the drum. there should be a hole to run the cable thru, then wrap one in one direction the other in the other direction, do not overlap the cable. then tape it so it does not come off.

There is a hole on one side of the drum and on the other there is a slot with offsets on each end. What do I do?

thread tiller line thru small pass thru hoe inside drum. Pull line thru until equal lengths extend from the ends. Thread one end of line thru contoured hole in upper flanged end of drum, and opposite end of line thru rectangular hole in lower end of drum.

Wind each line 4 times around in opposite directions, by following the groves in the drum. Both lines should lead off the top of the drum at it's center, so that as the steering wheel is turned one line wind up and the other line unwinds. Apply common adhesive tape over the assembled line to hold in place temporarily if desired.

TD...Thanks that helps but one more thing...Once I have threaded the line through the pass thru hole do I take the line on the inside the drum and feed it through the bottom contoured rectangler hole and start winding the line from the pass thru hole 4 times around the drum?
