Pulling a 115...

I'd like to pull my 1984 115hp I6 off the boat, but I'd like to leave the transom bracket/trim/tilt on the boat. It looks like it's just 4 bolts or so from what I can see. Is it that easy??

Of course the SELOC manual doesn't say anything about this procedure....come to think of it, the SELOC manual doesn't say much about anything and uses the same pictures over and over.

You will need to unbolt the studs under the powerhead 3 on either side and in front is another plus a bolt..
Unbolt the shift and throttle cable bracket from the block, three bolts.
Use a lifting ring that screws into the flywheel.

Once you take off the small wrap around cowl you will see the mounting bolts.

You take the nuts off the studs.

Am I crazy to remove just the motor and not transom bracket/trim/tilt assembly? I plan to bring the motor into my basement for the winter so I can overhaul it.
Should I just pull off the whole jobbie while i'm at it? I just figured it'd be a helluva lot heavier with the bracket on it.

You would need to unbolt the tilt tube (two large nuts+steering cable), and remove it after pulling the trim cylinders off the lower mounts. There may be a fabric strap that you need to remove as well.

What kind of overhaul do you have planned? If you plan to do any interior crankcase work, you need to pull the powerhead.

If there is nothing wrong with the midsection, just remove the lower unit and the powerhead. You have to pull the powerhead to rebuild it anyway. The lower unit has to come off to install a new impeller. You don't want to take the chance of overheating a rebuilt engine by using an oil impeller.

Re: Pulling a 115...

The previous owner fried the #1 piston. I still haven't been able to figure out why, and the only issue I've found on the surface so far is a fried wire connected to the idle stabilizer. For the most part, the motor seems to have been well taken care of, so I don't want to pull it apart just for the hellofit.

I've already drained the lower unit (gear oil looked great) and plan to remove it today after work. I'll certainly redo the water pump gaskets/impellar right away.
I need to get to the bottom of the overheat, so the powerhead definately needs to come off. Should thid be a fairly simple task with a cherry picker if the motor's been strictly a freshwater unit?...ordered lifting eye today.
If i'm just removing the powerhead, can most of the electrical components stay in place, or should the powerhead be stripped down before removal?

Thanks for all the info!

Pulling the power head is not that big of a deal if you have a lifting device such as your cherry picker. There are 8 nuts to remove from the studs, three on each side and two in the front. The hardest part on mine was to break it free from the gasket, keep in mind there are two dowls in the bottom that will need to be wiggled to get them to come out of the exhaust transition. Unhook the wires going to the power head, the control cables, remove the shrouds or brackets ( which ever you prefer to call them ), the fuel lines and the tell tale hose.

Here is a link to some pictures, maybe they will be of some help.

Re: Pulling a 115...

Pheewww....no luck so far getting the powerhead off. Haven't rented the cherry picker yet because I thought I''d try a couple'a other ways before spending the $ on the rental. I propped a bar under the powerhead and tried to jack it up off of it's seat..it didn't even budge! The whole rear of the boat and trailer were jacked up pretty far and it just wouldn;t budge. I've got all 8nuts removed off the studs...

What's the best way to break the motor from the gasket?
Any suggestions??

Re: Pulling a 115...

I use a cheap block and tackle to hoist the powerhead off the midsection. I attach the B&T high end to a 1/2 lag bolt in the garage door header. I then tighten the B&T and push on the block to rock it loose. Drop the gearcase first. It will make it much easier.

The block is only 125#. A cherry picker is overkill.

Re: Pulling a 115...

I do have a come-a-long that could lift the powerhead, but so far nowhere to rig it up. I may be able to hit up a friend for his garage.
The lower end is already off, as is everything else...if this block would just budge for me, I'd be a happy man. I had the entire weight of the boat resting on the block while I whacked it with with a sh and board...nadda. I'm having a hard time believing it's seized up, so I'm gonna keep tryin'...
