Hello All!
I hope I'm not hijacking this thread.
I'm not only new to this Site , I'm new to Boating. I have a 1988 bayliner Capri 19' bowrider W/ a Force 125, I just put in a new Floor, floor supports & Fiberglassed all of the Wood. From this Site I learned how to set the timing & adjust the Carbs, Great info. What I need to know, Does anyone know if I'll be able pull it up the ramp and out of the Water. I have a 2001 ford Ranger extra Cab 4 door 2 wheel drive W/ a 4.0 V-6 w/ auto trans. with a towing wt. of 5000 lbs the Trailer has a tongue wt. of 194 lbs at towing height, If I need more tongue wt. I can move the Axle back to increase it. I live Two miles from one of the many Boat Ramps in Clearlake Ca,

It'll be fine, just pull it out slow - don't jump on the gas.

I agree.. the only issue I could see having is if A)the ramp is slick or B) you get back in a bit to far.. Power-wise your good.. traction would be only concern.

You will be fine. I pulled a similar boat for years with a shortbed S-10 and my buddy pulled a 20'
bowrider with a extended cab Mazda (same as ranger) without any problems.

If you have a slick ramp toss a bag of sand in the bed of your truck it can help out on traction if needed or you can toss some on the ramp if needed.

Gary, you'll be fine with your rig. I never carried sand or sand bags for the ramps at Clear Lake, just a couple of burlap sacks when the algae gets really bad. I don't boat there any more because of the stupid sticker that they now tie to your registration. Even if you take it off and get caught in an inspection where they run the reg. they make you go through the cleaning station. I finally sold that boat after I got hassled at Lake Sonoma and Berryessa.

That boat weighs so little, I think you could pull it out with your legs. Your truck will pull it out with ease. Does it have a locking rear differential? Not a limited slip but a locker? They make a big difference on slippery ramps where power isn't the problem but traction is. Also, the tires make a huge difference as well. Also your pictures didn't show up.

When I pull with my 2wd Dakota(if I'm just launching at the ramp 1mi away) I usually deflate the tires to 30psi so they "squat" a little and expose a bit more tread surface area, and I normally keep 2 bags of rock salt in the rear of the bed anyhow. Never had an issue.

I was stationed @ CSTSC in Vallejo back in the mid 80's, and used to camp/hike there and Lake Berryessa on my weekends off. Beautiful country!

No locking diff. Limited slip.

I added a link for pics, http://s1050.photobucket.com/albums/s420/stuwpidasso/

Re: pulling a boat out of the water

ugh not to go against all the wisdom in here but i have that same truck but 4x4 and I can say it would struggle on a dry ramp pulling my 19ft fish and ski out in 2wd... mine is a manual transmission and yes i know the difference in towing capacity and I also know the only reason for that Ford doesn't want people to burn clutches up that don't know how to drive a stick and it come back on them. Mine does fine on the road and ramps in 4wd low are no problem, and would probably do fine on some flatish ramps in 2wd but i'm from the part of KY where "flat" doesn't exist. But as far as power is concerned you have plenty. the 4.0 V6 is a peppy little "bullet proof" motor. Traction is the issue. weight will help but it would be a bad day if you found out you can't get it out....

Also you will probably need more tongue weight, don't know what the percentage of the total rig but it sounds low...not having enough tongue weight can be desastrous. Last thing, If you are going to tow with an auto ranger you will need to add a trans cooler to keep the tranny from heating up to much. I think they are relatively cheap.

I doubt tranny heat will be an issue...

Since his questions has been answered this probably isn't a hijack.

I have a 2006 Kia Sportage 4x4 V6 Auto transmission. I have a boat in dry storage 2 miles away from the dock. The boat is a 2001 Bayliner Capri 185. Will I have problem taking this boat in and out of water? I have already towed it across town with no issue (about 10 miles).

LOL, well I did mean to by funny a little. Although my wife keeps telling me I'm not as funny as I think I am.

It seemed to me the thread had come to an end thus my question above still remains.

Re: pulling a boat out of the water

I tow a 3,500 lb (total weight) in/out bowrider with a Ford explorer that is the same 4.0 auto trans 2wd. It has 167,000 or so miles so i am pretty easy with it. It is well maintained and does surprisingly well for what it is. Id say the most deficient area if you were to pick one would be the brakes.

As far as tongue weight.... it is much much debated... I'm using 6% and it does very well in all conditions.

I would expect you to have some traction issues coming out of the water. Sand bags are a great idea. If you can put 200-300lbs over the rear wheels it will help a lot.

Another tip when backing in... once I'm lined up and on the wet ramp moving backward, i put it in neutral. It allows much more efficient breaking without sliding backward. You wont be fighting the torque converter. Same thing works for stopping an automatic trans on ice...

Oh and the majority of the time i keep the overdrive off!

Hey ya hijacker (lol). I dont think youll have any issues.. my brother has the same boat and tows it with a '08 wrangler 4x4 with a 3.7 v6.. granted it does struggle a bit on the steeper hills (we got some steep ones around here), then again he has a lift on it with big mud tires that rob him of some power.
