Hello again,

I have a 1992 Johnson 60hp (VJ60TLENE). I recently had the gears replaced, I just took the lower unit into the shop and now I'm trying to get it back on. The shift shaft doesn't appear long enough, I loosened the shift linkage as much as I could but it still isn't long enough. I marked where the shaft was in the lower unit and even when I only screw it in a thread or two it still isn't long enough. I feel kinda stupid because I know there?s a trick to it and I've wasted 6 hours (and a bottle of aspirin) trying.

Re: Pulling my hair out

Hey guys,

I finally got it! I had to loosen the shift linkage all the way and put the lower unit in forward. Now I'm working on getting the shift linkage back where it belongs, I think I have it about right. It was hitting back into gear when I started it but now it spins freely in each gear, however it seem a little harder going into reverse then it used to be. So my question is how do you know the settings are right?

You have to measure and adjust the distance from the mating surface of the gearcase to the center of the hole in the top of the shift rod. It needs to be fairly exact.

Do you have a service manual for that engine? That shift linkage has to be in proper adjustment or you are going to be replacing gears again.
