I have a 2004 trophy 2002. The manual says the trailer plus boat is around 4430 lbs. My regular tow vehicle is strong enuff. However, I'm purchasing a new suv for the wife. its towing capacity is rated at 5000. I get confused with tounge weight etc. Will the SUV be okay to tow this boat (short distances) from house to launch about 40 miles round trip 1X a month. Launch will not be on a ramp but off a hoist.

Probably.
The estimate is usually low in the manual. You have to take into account the weight of fuel and gear. I have towed my Trophy with an Acura MDX which has the same towing capacity (5000 lbs). I have a F-150 now, but don't notice a difference. I assume your trailer has brakes. There are some guys who will say you need a 1-ton to tow a canoe, but since you're not even launching nor retrieving, you should be okay.

Re: Pulling my trophy.

I use to tow my 2002 WA with my Jeep Cherokee (6 cyl) just twice a year, too and from the marina. It was definately a STRAIN on the jeep. The hitch was also rated at 5000lb.

Now I just go down to the UHaul place and rent a brand new Pick up (v8), and for about $75 I have no problems towing.

Hope this helps.

in reality, the manufactures tow rating is bs. Take the tow rating cut it in half. 5000 lbs = 2500 lbs. I have 2009 gmc 2500 hd. 6.0l gas. It says i can tow 11,200. Yeah maybe on flat ground for 100 ft. My trophy is 6200 lbs. 4200 boat 2000 trailer. I towed this boat from southern virgina to western PA where i live. I went around the belt way up 95 at 70 mph no prob. Although i get 8 mpg. But i dont care its comfortable. Thats the most i will tow. But you can be the judge, Hey worst case . tow it once. it works great. If it doesnt, looks like we need a bigger suv. Id recomend a YUKON Denali. lol
