Re: Pulling outdrive, couple questions
Is there a gasket for the lower when replacing the impeller, the manual is not showing a gasket? no gasket between the upper and lower, just the quad ring. several gaskets for the water pump housing. Should I replace then entire water pump? if it's the first time you've personally been inside the waterpump. i would do the waterpump housing too. I know it hasn't been done in a couple years. Anything else to replace while I'm in there?
as for anything else while your there. the best place to look is in your oem service manual. there's a maint. schedule that tells you what you should be addressing and how often.
from memory.
do your impeller and housing. inspect lower drive shaft at the top of the shaft for oil seal wear. the wear will be from the very bottom oil seal in the upper. inspect that seal too. it's easy to replace if needed. there is also a seal in the waterpump base. this seal can wear on the drive shaft too. perhaps check that seal.
1st time i had my drive seperated, there was sand build up in the ft. part of the lower. by the shift shaft. the cavity that has the pee hole in the ft. of the bullet of the lower. clean that area out so it's clean.
while the drive is off. check alignment. check gimble brg. for total smooth feel. grease ujoints, grease gimble brg. grease coupler. inspect bellows. grease shift slide and shift lever. inspect water hose between bellhousing and gimble housing. if you find any rust inside the drive shaft area. inspect the ft. seal and yoke seal surface on the upper.
you can remove the prop or not remove it. in the end. i'll guess you have it removed. might as well. you need to grease the prop shaft too.
i'd guess i missed something. that's where your oem service manual comes in. they don't forget anything. follow it.
when reassembling the upper and lower, do it on the bench, it's much easier. also put the water pipe in the water pocket cover, the guide tube in the waterpump housing and lub the ends for ease of installing the two halves together.
after the drive is all together, pressure and vac. test it to be sure no seals are leaking. you can also pressure test when the upper and lower are separated too.
read the service manual closely. there's much info in it. follow it.
personally, i use oem parts. they always work right the first time. i can't say that about some aftermarket non mercruiser parts. ya get what you pay for.
don't forget to put the washer on top of the shift shaft either prior to reassembly..
like i said, i'd guess i missed something. so there's probably more than what i've talked about. other folks or the s/m will pick up my slack i hope for you..
