Pulling Steering Wheel- 1984 Sea Ray SRV210

I want to access some electrical panels on my 1984 Sea Ray SRV210. To do that, I need to pull the steering wheel. In the center of the wheel, there is the head of a bolt that is accessed by removing a plastic plug. That bolt goes all the way through the instrument panel to the steering mechanism. The bolt passes through the steering mechanism where it is secured with a nut safetied with a cotter pin. That bolt will have to be removed to pull the steering wheel. Will I be opening a huge can of worms if I do so?
