Re: pulling the outdrive

Its a 1976 seastar with a straight 6 motor. After buying the boat we found it had ahairline fracture in the block about 12 inches long...
We got the old motor out and the new one in but cant seem to get the motor mount bolts and washers to line up. So currently we have the motor sitting in the boat on two steps and a piece of wood. Anyone live in the columbus ohio area have an engine hoist we can borrow?

Re: pulling the outdrive

I have to assume you have a Mercruiser engine, with an Alpha type drive.
YES, you must pull the engine, otherwise you will not be able to get the engine back in without possible damage to the coupler. And if you don't get all the motor mount parts back in the proper position and you don't get the engine aligned properly, you will be removeing the engine againt to replace a very expensive coupler.
Do you have an alignment bar? How about a manual, do you know how to pull the outdrive without bending things????

Re: pulling the outdrive

Put helm in foreward. Take off the two bolts at the end of the trim cylinders. Remmove the trim ram. Remove your zinc, 3/8" allen. Remove allen key under zinc 5/16". Remove 6 nuts 5/8". Drive should slide off, (with help of course). If you can put the skeg right on the ground, or wood, with drive all the way down, it will help with the re-installation of the drive. You really should get a merc. manual for your alignment issues, (among other things). Get an alignment tool. Hope this helps.....J

Re: pulling the outdrive

Pull the drive and then put in the motor. Check the alignment with a tool and then put the drive back on
