I just purchased a used 2001 Bayliner Capri 16' with a 2002 90 HP Mercury Outboard. With the engine down all the way, when you get up to plane speed and beyond it pulls very hard to the right. Once it is trimmed up to a comfortable postion it seems to steer fine.

I've had a few I/O's before and know they can stear a little each way, but nothing like this. It was a very hard pull. There didn't appear to be any vibrations or anything else noticible, but I've only had an older and smaller outboard before.

Does this seem normal, or any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi Dan,It could be a number of things. Is there a hydro foil mounted on the lower unit?
Or it could be torque steer, see where your trim tab is obove the prop.It is adjustable and can help steering problems.Try moving weight around in the boat and see if any change.
Welcome to Iboats...I know some of the guys here can give you more ideas.

Turn your trim tab in the direction of the pull, maybe 10 degrees at a time to see if that will help out. It that increases the pull, then go the other way, but I think what I first said is correct.

Thanks, I'll check on those things.

Not sure why it would do it when the engine was all the way down but not when it is raised up to a comfortable level?

Are you active duty Navy? I have a daugher that is a Hospital Corpsman (almost 10 years now), and a son going in this summer.

Dan if you are refuring to his Master chief petty officer Iboats ranking that has nothing to do with US service it is his iboats rank due to how many post he has made. We all start as a cadet and due to how many post we do it changes.

Gss036,
I have a slight pull to the RIght also. I have gotten rid of most of it, by remounting my Hydrofoil. One question though about your above post, when you say move the Trim tab in the direction of the Pull, I need clarification.

I have a 88 Force 125hp engine. So to correct my problem I would need to move it a little bit to the right. So is the Front of the Trim pad that needs to be moved to the right or the Read of the trip pad, as to make the Front of the Trim tab go to the left?

I have been moving the Front of the Trim tab to the Left, instead of the right, this then forces the larger rear to go to the Right, which then should add more drag forcing the boat to the left to even out the pull.

I have not had to much success with this, It did get rid of my low speed pulling to the right, but at higher speed I still pull to the right some.

Thanks for all the help.

Bryan

Think of the trim tab as a compass, you are standing at the rear of the boat the front of tab is pointed "NORTH", if you have moved it to say 350 degrees, try moving it to 345 degrees and see if that helps. Bayliner hull designs are hard to regulate because they tend to drift so much. You are never going to get that hull to run straight w/o help from the operator.

the reason the pull is greater trimmed in ,is that the hull sits deeper in the water and a lot of the torque is fed back into the steering, when you are planing you trim out for best ride ,less weight of boat against drive therefore less torque against steering ,if you trim to the limit you will find fingertip steering ,but it pays to keep some weight against you as this keeps your attention focused.
