I know I may sound like an idiot...but here goes. I have an 89'I/O Mercruiser 3.0, since I bought the boat the pump has never worked (only had it in the water handfull of times). How can I found out if the pump is bad or how can I find out how replace the pump? Any help would be appreciated!!!

replace intake water line inside engine from the lower unit with clear vinyl renforced see thru type. Look to see if water is there when engine is running.

Shane,
I assume you are talking about raw water intake pump. The thing that brings your cooling water from the outdrive to the engine.
Doesen't the engine overheats:
Main indication of water intake pump bad is engine gets overheated to 200+ degrees. Need to address if this is the case, otherwise you will blow the engine.
Instructions on replacement of pump are in Mercruiser manual or HERE

Good luck

Intrepid....where can I find the intake line? Once I get a little knowledge of what it what, I work on anything, but boats are new to me, so sorry for the elementary questions? We are talking about the same thing right? The Bilage pump?

I think I might be thinking about something different...I'm not sure what it's called(maybe bilage) but its the pump that take water out of the boat incase it takes on water (ie. kids in and out of water). The boat has never even come close to running hot, it stays mid-range.

Shane,
Intrepid and I were both under impression that you are talking about your cooling system pump.
I suspecter you are talking about "BILGE PUMP" but got that out of the way since you have mentioned engine type.
The bilge pump makes a vibrating noise as it starts working. If you have water in the bilge and turn the pump on, the water will or at least should come out from the side of the boat.
If it is automatic bilge pump, the one that goes "on" as the water level rises and picks up build in switch you can test it by flipping it upside down. It should power "on" when you flip it.
Bottom line if it's not working replace it with a new one. Automatic is better in my opinion. I have a pump made by "RULE" and I like it. What you get, is your choice.
Good luck,
Lenny

Re: Pump Gone Bad??

Thanks for the reply's, Yah I'm not talking about the pump that cool's the boat down. I know this has antifreeze, although not sure if that means thats the only way it gets cool...but I do have a switch to turn the bilge pump on(on the dash). I guess I will go and get a new one this weekend!! Does anyone have an idea on what I should be paying? I hate getting ripped off, especially when I have no idea what one shoudl cost!

I guess before you worry about being ripped of paying too much for a bilge pump you should check some things before you go spend money on one.
Like the fuse, wiring, switch on dash, float switch. any connections in the bilge area.

-Lost Canadian, thanks for the link....These are a lot cheaper than what I was planning. I was thinking more along the lines of a couple hundred. Much appreciated on the above tips before buying though!
