I have a 1978 volvo penta 280A. Wanted to change raw water pump impeller as I do not know when the last time it was replaced. Just want to know if it is alright to change just the impeller or if it is better to change the whole thing, housing and all. Don't know if new impeller in old housing will seat itself correctly and pump efficiently. Thank you

Re: pump impeller

If the inside of the housing is not damaged, you can replace the impeller. ( $35 ) If the housing is damaged, then you know what to do ( $265 ) Check to ensure the shaft seal in the back of the pump is good. You should get the engine model number as well. The water pump is actually in the engine parts catalogs. ( 280 is the drive number )

Re: pump impeller

Okay to just replace the impeller, but, and this is a BIG BUT....YOU MUST REPLACE THE NEW IMPELLER WITH THE VANES POINTED IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS BEFORE (COULD BE CLOCKWISE, OR COUNTERCLOCKWISE), AND LUBE IT WITH SOMETHING FIRST (VASELINE OKAY).
