I ran a test a few years back.
I pumped the oil out via the dipstick, then pulled the plug to see whats left.
Basically nothing! So I stopped worrying!!

Pump it out,you don't want to create a leak where the dipstick attach?s

Manual pumps work fine. Remember to warm the oil first ;)

Just a friendly reminder, and this thread is generic enough so no biggee, but we really recommend starting your own thread for technical topics.

Thanks for the info.

Understood on starting your own thread, but I figured being a question that has probably been asked a million times, I would search for an answer instead of making a new redundant thread and gotten a "GTFO noob do a search!" ;)

Get a female garden hose fitting with a nipple that fits into the tube that you'll be running to the pump. If it's what I have on my 98 it will fit. I use the venturi type pump with an air compressor and it empties the crankcase real quick.

Manual ones work fine, if you are only doing 1 oil change per year on your boat, then it's not worth the money to get an electric powered one.

My that's a lot of options! With a small 3.7L and easy access, does one really need the electric pump for 5-6 quarts? Or is a manual one just fine?

Thanks.

On Volvos, the dipstick tube that you suck the oil out of actually connects to the oil pan drain hole which is not how yours is set up.

Re: Pump oil out or drain it?

The vacuum type oil pumps work best. No need for an impeller type pump. A hose from the pump slide down the dipstick tube. Make sure the oil is hot. If the oil is cold it will be too viscous to pump out.

On Volvos, like the OP has, you want to have a pump that has the hose fitting to screw onto the dipstick, not the type that slides down the dipstick. It doesn't need to be nearly as warm that way either if needed.

I see you also have Volvos. Why not get an adapter that screws onto your dipstick?

you could always get a fumoto valve and drain it that way all u have to do is attach the right size hose to the end of it and run the hose out of your hulls drain plug hole to a contanier and its a done deal. then u close the valve and fill

LOL...why when the dipstick goes into the drain plug already on Volvos?

The pump I have uses a tube and the vaccum seal is maintained by a rubber "cup" that inserts into the dipstick entrance. I have been using it for 10 years. Oil is removed in about 5 minutes after just a few plunges on the pump.
