Re: Puppy

Just my 2 cents here but when we have introduced a pup or dog to boating for the first time we never stay out for an extended period of time. Certainly no longer than you would go between outside bathroom breaks for them at home. Get them ashore and give them some time for a bathroom break.

Re: Puppy

We have a yellow lab "daughter" that was the absolute first priority when deciding what type of boat to get (easy boarding, carpeted rear deck for her to lounge, etc). She's 10 now, and can hold it, but I still don't push it. We're never out more than 5-6 hours with out running in quick to let her do her business. With a puppy, unless he/she is in a crate, don't push it more than a couple of hours. It's an inconvienience, but worth training them to wait. Another piece of advice, swimming almost always "works things down". We always let Bailey swim prior to boarding the boat. Even just a couple of retrieves is all it takes for her to need to find a place to dump. Once that's done, she's good to go for the rest of the day.

OK, one more piece of advice (can you tell I'm a dog lover - OK, at least a Lab lover). Introduce the dog to the boat in the driveway a few times. A puppy is going to see that water and only think one thing - what's the shortest line to it! Get him/her used to sitting in the boat in the driveway, it will be worth it. I did the same for the canoe. My father said you will never get a lab to sit still in a canoe. After half a dozen times in the yard, she does great and doesn't flinch in the canoe.

Any other questions, ask away. Be safe and have fun with the dog!

Re: Puppy

Tasha, will bust before she messes the boat. periodic land is necessary. 50 miles out and 50 miles back and she will not go. but as soon as she sees land, i have to leash her, to keep her from jumping.

also, i think puppy training in the car, first, gets them use to motion. then, put them in the boat at home, and let them get the smell, etc of the boat. then, an easy cruise on the water. some freak out as soon as you start the motor.

pet life jacket is a must. Walmart has a good selection usually in the summer.

Tasha learn one of the project boats.

Re: Puppy

we took our charlie out on the boat last year.

I dont think I have to worry about him jumping over, he's doesn't like to go swimming. Hates rain.. Anything wet.

But for some reason, the wave splashes from he side of the boat when you are going slow, he tries to bite the water. Before we go out this year with him, we'll buy him a flotation jacket. Just incase he decides to jump.

He loves it too. I can get lets go for a ride and he'll sit right at the car/truck door. If I say boat? he'll runt o the boat and try to get in..

I have two Labs, both about 100 lbs. The only way I can get them back on board after a potty dive is via their life jackets with the handle on the back. Ruffwear makes the best ones! They actually like wearing them.

They will associate the jacket with the boat..and if they like the boat they will like the jacket...sorta like how a leash indicates a walk.

I see a lotta labs here, and one husky. We were thinking one of them crossbred mutts (labra-doodle) as I have some weak allergies to the lab coat. Although I'd prefer a larger dog (irish wolfhound or mastiff breed). We're waiting till the baby is big enough to walk and stuff first though....then daddy and puppy are going fishin when we get the chance! :D

Re: Puppy

We take a lab mix and a large bully dog (not a pit) the lab mix isn't that keen on riding in the boat (like to hide on my lap) but puts up with it for the swimming and the retrieving (loves to retrieve). We have to help him back in the boat. The bully dog can get in off the swim step all by herself. She loves the ride and the water and can fetch a whole tree.

We took them out a few times last summer, this year they will get life jackets.

I think it's great you are introducing a dog to your aquatic life! Good luck and I hope it brings you much happiness!

I would have loved to introduce him to the boat at home...but my boat unfortunately will never be home. Thanks for the advice everybody

Re: Puppy

I have had Golden Retrieves since 1973 and I'm sure they would love going out on the boat, but the one we have now is 10 years old and I don't think she would enjoy it much at all. When she was young yes, but she does not do any jumping at all any more and really never was that much into water like all the others I have had. She is the 5th Golden I've had.

Not sure we are going to have another dog for a while when she's gone. Just tour me up when I had to have her mate put down about a year and a half ago. He was 12 years old, which is about all you can expect out of a Golden.

The 10 year old we have now is the puppy in my avatar and the big guy is the one we had to have put down. Connor and Kay Leigh, both great dogs.

Re: Puppy

most dogs love boating and others hate it. Our terrier Shelby hates it- she sits between my knees and tries to send me telepathic messages to " Slow Down" at anything above idle.
Our other dogs are naturals.
