Looking at purchasing an 89 regal sebring 19' with the 4.3 litre. Initial glance is that is in above average condition. Always trailered and kept in garage. Asking $6500. Any thoughts? this will be my first boat and will be kept docked on an inland lake. Used mainly for pleasure/skiing/fishing. Spent alot of time on boats in the past. Have not fully decided on boat this big or something smaller (16-17' OB in the 115hp range?). Is fuel consumption difference enough to go with IO vs OB? Thanks,

For the size boat that you desire,I have always preffered outboards. They get you more power in less HP than an i/o and surely less maintenance.Charlie

Re: Purchasing 89 Regal

I have a friend that lives an hour south and his family (it is his father in laws) has almost the identical boat within a couple of years and I'm sure it has the same engine. I've spent lots of time in it.

First off, it is a really nice 1st class boat. Theirs is well kept too and the interior looks like new. VERY comfortable and quiet boat. In fact, it is one of the quietest boats I've ever rode in. You can be going down the lake at full throttle and barely have to raise your voice in a conversation. They get lots of comments at the ramp and on the lake about how nice the boat is - which is very rare for a boat that age.

On the other hand I have to totally agree with C Charlie on the outboard recommendation. It sounds like from your first post that you may have some reservations about having such a big / heavy boat. If this is true then you have to think long and hard about this boat. What are you going to pull it with? I have owned / operated 5 boats in my lifetime - like you, lots of time on the water. 4 of my boats were OB's and the one before our current boat was a 17 1/2 foot I/0. The IO was the heaviest and highest maint boat I've owned. We now have a smaller OB bowrider and it is the boat we've always been looking for. It is light, yet roomy.

Our buddies with the Regal also had some very expensive repairs - $3500 for a warped head engine redo.

While I know first hand that the Regal is an awesome boat - and the 6,500 may be a tad high, but in the ballpark if in the condition you say, my vote is totally for an OB bowrider.

Jeff

Thanks for the great info. Does gas consumption differ enough between this and say a 17' BR with roughly a 120 OB to tilt me one way or the other?

Re: Purchasing 89 Regal

OB is definitely more thirsty. From my folks having a Johnson 135 on a 17/2 footer and me owning a 17 1/2 footer with a 120 I/O, I can safely say that the I/O uses about 25 - 30% less gas. Would be more, but the I/O is so much heavier than the OB that the savings is not as much.

How much to you plan on using the boat?

Personally I stand by my vote for the OB. I would easily pay twice as much for gas for the OB as you probably will recoup it in repairs and just plain the ease of having a boat that weighs sooo much less.

Lets just assume you spend $20 more a week in gas using your OB over IO. Lets use 12 weeks of hard use for a benchmark. That's 240 dollars. First big repair on an IO would wipe that out that savings very fast.

OTOH, maybe you have more free time than most and plan on using the boat 2-3 times a week (I did when I was a teenager). If you ski hard and put in long days with it then maybe the gas savings could amount to something worth while.

Jeff

Friends of mine have that same kind of boat. It's nice, quiet as others have mentioned, handles well, and has plenty of power. Defintely a 1st class boat.......

Thanks for all the input, just took it for a water test and it is damn near new. The guy is an auto mechanic. Now I have to decide if this is the type of boat I would like (other than the 16 to 18' OB). He says he won't go below 6K but I think he may take 5500 (includes dolfin, ss prop and possbibly comp slalom ski used twice.)

You still sound like you have doubts. Sounds like the Regal is so nice that you are trying to talk yourself into it. Yes, you have to decide. It doesn't sound like too bad a deal. I didn't check the NADA on it, but I know that 10 years ago my friends dad paid $6,500.00 for their Regal (which I think is a Medallion) and that was REALLY a good deal then. The guy being a mech is a plus, so it should have been well cared for. You said it is like new so it doesn't sound too bad. Keep us posted on what you go with.

Jeff

Correct, not sure but the regal is a great boat. I am switching gears to go look at a 96 17'Sunbird with a 115 evinrude. EC (aren't they all), Beam is a foot less and looks like half the weight. Any thoughts on Sunbird?

Re: Purchasing 89 Regal

In my slightly biased opinion, I would go with the Regal. I have an '89 18' Mediallion complete with a Mercurser 4.3 and and an Alpha 1 out back; and without a doubt it's been the best boat I've ever owned. :D

I may be lucky, because the PO was fanatical about maintance, but in the six years I've owned it all I've had to do other than spring and fall oil and filter changes (and the bi yearly sparkplug change) has been to replace the gimble bearing and the steering cable.

Fuel usage is better than any comparable hp (210) outboard I've owned to say nothing of the ride.

Sure it's a little heavier than say a Bayliner, but when the chop gets a bit rough, I'm still just crusing along while (from MY observations) 99% of the "other" brands are pounding like crazy.

It's not as fast (45mph with the right prop) as some others, but IMHO it more than makes up for it with it's ride and handling.

Wingnutt..

Your boat sounds identical to my friends father in laws. I have to totally agree with you on the ride and the amenities. 1st class all the way.

Jeff

Re: Purchasing 89 Regal

No comparison at all as far as quality. The Regal is a far better boat than a Sunbird.I have owned several Regals and find the quality to be top notch. The only thing I can knock Regal for is that the dark colored gelcoat they use fades more than average. It is not a gelcoat for someone that does not take good care of their hull.Waxing once a year wont do it.I currently own a 32ft Commodore and love it!!!!Charlie
