I am new to boat ownership and I am looking at purchasing a 14' Pointer Smuggler Side Consol. It has a 25 Johnshon 3 cyl. The boat and trailer look to be in good shape. I started the engine and after we ran it a few minutes, I did notice a small pool of oil(about the size of a saucer), underneath the prop. Is this of concern? The engine ran great, no shimmering, very little smoke. It was about 30* outside when we ran it. What other things should I look for? Someone told me I should test the compression, does anyone know what the compression should be at? Model J25pl3ee Thanks

rope or electric start?

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Thats just exhaust oil, did you run it on a cooling water hose ?
If not, the water pump will melt, its rubber.

Re: Purchasing a new boat

So heres the rundown:
14' Smuggler -Pointer Model 1988
25 Johnson 3 cyl 1999
2002 Bandit Trailer

We cranked it up last night, and it started right up. Electric Trim/Tilt/Start. Some oil/grease leaking from Propeller area. Motor ran good, quiet, no shaking, no sputtering. I plan on using this for fishing in Nantucket Sound(staying close to shore 1 mile).
He is asking $2000
I am interested in what you guys think.

Well, the motor is relatively new for an outboard. If the boat is in nice condition without and dry rot or blemishes, then it sounds like a decent deal to me.
