I can't believe the small number of SHT recently. Don't tell me everyone has cleaned up their acts - or are they just keeping them under their hats????????
Come on - confess, before I loose my addiction.

Re: PURITANS?

OK Gonefishie: The other Friday evening 8.15 the phone rang. "How impulsive are you? What about meeting us at the turnoff at 7.00 am tomorrow".
"OK we'll be there!"
Sounds simple except that the 4WD had little fuel, the porta-bote had none at all. It's pitch black in the shed & the turnoff is nearly 300km away!.
We slept in & didn't get away till about 5.00am, but we were there only 15 minutes late. Unfortunately, the 3.0 l diesel isn't fast enough to take full advantage of the "no speed limit" section of highway.
Sun was high & temperature about 39 degrees C.

No canopy on the porta-bote. Snagged my first cast on the wife's rod & got a huge birdsnest! Had to rig the wife's rod also. The other boat had 2 good barramundi landed before we had a line in the water.

Re: PURITANS?

Capt Joe, 39C means its your turn to keep us posted from down there. We're seeing 39F and while I'm surely still stooopid, I aren't doin it in no boat...

Well, almost...

A 250lb friend I recruited says I put his life in jeopardy today for attempting to tarp a pontoon in a "slight breeze". He says that first surprise gust was a close one - hey, as if I caused it...

I've always wondered about those guys you see in the old newsreels that don't let go of the blimp mooring rope. Now I've met one. Gotta say he became a real fast worker!

No matter what he says I'm still claiming that America's cup racers surely carry more sail than a 16x30 WalMart double reinforced blue UV special... ;)

Re: PURITANS?

Hunky Dory: a 16 x 30 tarp woul certainly catch a heap of wind, even if it was a small gust. But as you say "Why hang on to the rope?"

Also when we get the heat, we don't get much of a breeze, unless it is very strong.
We are also officially now in the cyclone season, so we may get our share of very big winds before too long.

Re: PURITANS?

Looked you up on msn maps; do I have it right?

From anywhere in Australia, drive until you are equidistant from nowhere, then turn north. Drive forever and take a left into Darwin.

Are you in the domain of the salt water crocodiles? Otherwise it looks like it must be water-lover's heaven.

Re: PURITANS?

Hunky Dory: You've got the directions just about right, but you forgot the distances. The next town is Katherine(Pop 9,000)300 km south, followed by Tennant Creek (3,800)another 700km, then Alice Springs (28,000)another 600km. Then it's only another 1500+ km to Adelaide, our closest capital city.

You are right about the slat water crocs. We usually see several (up to about 15 ft is common) each time we go fishing, except in the sea. They go 100+ km inland along the rivers. That's probably why boat fishing is preferred to bank fishing.

In the sea we have sharks, stingers, stone fish & blue ringed octopus, so I stick to swimming in pools.

But the fishing is good, due to the remoteness the fish are not over exploited.

Re: PURITANS?

Wow!

Of course the sun can turn your skin to porkrind in a day up here but our biggest water hazard is of the broken beer bottle hidden in the sand variety...

Or perhaps worse, the occasional drunken jetski maven. But that's a galactic exposure so I guess it doesn't count...

Re: PURITANS?

Here's my stupid human trick for the week...middle of November, highs near 80, I committed to honey-do's for the whole danged weekend, what a waste of great fishing weather!
