push button starter

Hey all...i have a 62 crestliner with original 40hp seahorse on the back. problem is my key start is screwed and i cant find a new one. i was thinking of installing a push button starter in the dash...is this possible? if so, pushing the button will crank the motor to start it, but how would i shut her down again? any help would be great...thanks!

Two buttons. One to start and one to kill. If you have an electric choke, another one to choke. All you need is the wiring diagram for the outboard and switch, then assign the various wires to the right places. I could do it if I was looking at it, but I can't just write it down, I'm afraid.

Lots of boats back in the late 50s and early 60s skipped the key and used pushbuttons. My old boat with the RDS-20 35hp had a bad switch, but I had pushbuttons on hand. I went with those.

On the other hand, that outboard uses a standard OMC 5-wire switch. You should be able to find one of those in any decent marine store. Then, you could just switch the wires from the old one to the new one and go out in the boat.

The link below is to a wiring diagram for 1958-61 models. While it may not be technically correct if your motor is a 1962 model, it should be close enough to help you work through the problems you are having. If you will post your motor's model number, maybe another forum member can help you get the correct one. Also, I just sent you a Private Message. Good luck!
