I replaced the push rod cover gasket and noticed that 2 bearings were lifted. Would this effect engine performance? I have been trying to pin point why I have coughing / sputtering problems.

Re: Push Rods

They are lifters and they are lifting the push rod to push on the rocker to open that particular valve. Totally normal operation. The bottom of the lifter is being pushed up by the lobe on the camshaft. If you turn the enginine over, all your lifters will cycle up and down. You hope. If they dont you have a worn camshaft and the lobes are worn down, or you have a bad lifter.
