It's taken over a month I guess, but I finally fixed the tapping noise... and it had nothing to do with pushrods, lifters, or valves..... even tho we all agreed it sounded like it.
A member named Ilerrad came up with this "off the wall" notion: The fuel pump lever spring breaks and the lever doesn't ride on the cam. So the cam lobe "slaps" the heck out of the lever.
Yup, that was it!!!!!! The fuel pump was original equipment with a cracked diaphragm so I had to replace it. And glad I did cause this puppy runs strong, smooth, and without nasty noises.
I WANT TO THANK ALL of you who have offered your experience and ideas AND thank iboats.com for creating this great website.
I know I'll be back.... and for starters, does anyone know exactly where the timing should be set for this puppy???? I now have it at about 10 degrees before TDC.
Again, thanks to ALL of you.... now I can venture out into the Gulf.
Skiph

Skiph, I do not think the suggestion was off the wall at all. We had some cars when I was growing up that had noticable tap-tap-tap noises upon acceleration. My father always said "fuel pump" noise. Since fuel injection and the associated electric fuel pump came along in the early 1980s, this noise has vanished.
