so last night my motor saw water for the first time in awhile. It shifted smooth into forward and reverse but when put in forward gear it didnt go. it did however go in reverse.

the shift operation itself went very smooth, no loud bumpage or thudding into gear. the the gear dog and the "clutch" part of both for. and rev. gears are in great shape and dont appear to be worn at all. what could be the cause of this??

o yea, with the engine shut off i can shift into first and the prop "locks" like it would be in gear, not sure if that tad of info will help

like always...1966 johnson sea horse 20 hp

Shift cable out of adjustment, is it controlled from controls or the motor itself?

i figured it was the shift adjust. it is controlled by the lever on the side of the motor.

I don't think there is a cable, it's a rod no? Cable for controls inside the boat. Did you check your prop?

Re: put motor in gear, wont go tho

for the record i meant shift rod (i havent slept in 30 hours trying to fix this GD thing) hahaha.

but the sticky says there needs to be a "shift rod height" does this apply for my 66 sea horse??

what do u mean check the prop? i know the pin is good, and i know the prop was seated on it/ bolted down correctly?

sorry about all the questions, 2morro is my last chance to use this before i head off to school, i would really like to get this fixed tonight!!!
thanks

If it worked fine before and doesn't now (and you didn't remove the lower unit in the meantime, it's not going to adjust itself out of alignment. By check the prop, the person was indicating they think the pro has spun on the hub. I know that's an older style motor without thru-hub exhaust, but I believe there is still a rubber hub inside the prop. You should get a sharpie and make obvious marks on the prop itself and then another one aligned with it on the hub, and go for a ride. If the two lines come out un-aligned, the prop has spun the hub, and will need to go to a prop shop to be fixed.

Yes Hybrid, as I have learned tonight from another thread these have a rubber hub inside that can spin independant of the actual prop, hense a spun prop :)

The lower end is very basic. Down shaft with gear on bottom. (2) opposing gears at base with output shaft running out to prop. Clutch dog riding between opposing gears on output shaft.

Most shift by pushing the link for reverse. Pulling for forward.
A shortened rod will lose forward while a to long(stretched) rod would lose reverse.
Position of shift handle should be sitting offset to the problem side when in neutral.
