Hi Brianf...

welcome to the board..

you are not very specific in your description so its alittle hard to determine what the prob is..

some questions..
1. was your outdrive working fine before you changed motors?
2. where did you get the 351 replacement from? was it rebuilt by reputable mech? were you able to turn it over by hand when it was out?
3. is you starting system working? (ie does the starter engage and try to spin the motor?)

In order to make suggestions, you have to give us some more details.

regards

Frank

Yes.. It could be iether. Go buy a 1QT can of "Marvel Mystery oil". It comes in a red metal can,the design of which hasn't changed much in 49years I have been around to see.
This stuff is great for freeing-up siezed engines.
Remove the plugs, and pour about an ounce in to each plug hole, and allow it to sit overnight.
In the morning, get a breaker bar with a socket that fits the crankshaft pulley bolt. Don't turn it over with the starter,or have the ignition on when you are doing this..Turn the engine over clockwise..Stand on it, if you have to.. Once it turns free (assuming that werked), run a compression test before replacing the plugs...I mean, WHY did it sieze-up? Is this block new, remanufactured, or a used engine?
Anyhoo, if the compression passes, replace plugs, drain and refill oil (no need for new filter,as you didn't run any contaminated oil thru it), and try it. It's sort of common for an engine to be "tight" when new or rebuilt. But with plugs out, you should be able to turn it over with a small breaker bar or ratchet with no trouble.
Lettuce no how it turnz out. :D

The old outbord 351w has siezed. S&S engines out of washingtonre built it. They out board I don't know about. Just bought the boat. The starting system appears to work. Starter is kicking out.

Remove the plugs (sparkplugs) and try to turn the motor over by hand with a breaker bar as described above. You really should be able to turn it over with a breaker bar even with the plugs in. If it will turn by hand the prob is with the starting system...if not then go with the Mar Myst Oil and let it sit a day and try it again. If no turn still I would talk to the rebuilder.

Has it turned at all...even half a turn.
More info would help....
Would it turn before installation?
Whatever you do do not let it sit and say I'll figure it out later . It will only get worse.
Do not try to force it with the breaker bar...
No 4' Cheeter Bar the crank shaft bolt will break.
Stand on a short one if you have to but do not get to crazy. You should be able to turn it pretty easy with a 1/2" drive ratchet with the plugs out.
Did the motor sit for awhile before install after the rebuild?
????

good luck
Sean

If it is not in nuetral, the stater would not even try to engage, right. But is worth a try.

I feel like your stater is probably weak and just won't turn over the new motor. I have seen that happen before. That old starter will turn some old tired low compression motor but when you put a fresh motor in, the starter don't have enough lead in it's pencil anymore.

In gear or not that 351W should turn by hand. With the plugs in it will take some muscle. Plugs out and it should be a one handed deal.

But check the neutral start feature also.
Maybe that is you problem....but if the stater trys to engage I have my doubt's.

It sounds like the engine is frozen.
I would do everything said previously with one exception,
1.remove the sparks plugs and spray DW40 into each cyclinder and let soak over night.
2.Then try turning the crank shaft with a breaker bar clock wise, if it turns, keep turning a few times, Make sure the engine has oil.(you might want to prim the engine by removing the distributor, mark the settings, timing, with a drill.)
3.If this makes the engine turn, your in business.
4.Check the electrical to insure you have spark if the starter will crank.
5.If the starter doesn't crank remove it and test it separately with a battery. If it cranks slow with a good battery rebuild the starter or get a new good, the bushings and brushes are probably bad.
6.Install the starter and crank it, if it cranks and won't start, chech the secondary ignition coil, cable, cap and rotor.
Good Luck.

Re: put new in bord 351 w in but can't turn it over

based on your first post (start at the top and work down) the motor is fine. You said the motor turns over when it is not connected to the outdrive. That would indicate to me your outdrive is bad. However, I know nothing about inboards, or boat motors in general. Hopefully one of these more experienced sea dogs can assist you further. Guys, lets just assume the engine works. What would cause the outdrve to lock up on this guy?

Anything New?
I could be wrong but, the outdrive should turn freely befrore you install the motor. If it does and the the motor locks it up, it is likely misaligned.

if you turned it over by hand befor you put it in
and it turned freely. i would think you did this
with the plugs out? take the plugs out and try it . i got the wrong plugs for my ford once that were to long. locked up tight. also before pulling plugs try to rotate the motor backwards a little so as not to mangle up the piston when pulling the plugs.
