was just given a Gateway with a 566 celeron and all the discs. My wifes aunt said the monitor quit working. Well I hooked it up to another monitor and it still will not work. I think that the port is bad. My question is is possible to buy a plug in card to use this computer, or is there a 'gender bender' available to go from the monitor into a usb port? This model is in the flex atx case. Someone told me that I would need a new motherboard. Any and all help will be apprieciated. Thanks in advance.
ps. it is running windows Me.

Sounds as if the "Video Card" may be the culprit.
Problem is that these are imbedded on the motherboard with a lot of manufacturers these days.
Gateway have been known to use this practice. If your mother board has a separate display card installed then it will be easy to get another card installed in the slot and you should be seeing things again.

Good luck

Peter

peterf, thanks for the reply. The card is indeed imbedded on the motherboard. Any suggestions on what kind of card to get? I want to fix this one for my 11 yr old daughter to use. Thanks again.

Some intergrated micro ATX motherboards do have a AGP port as well as a built in video card, you need to look inside the case, the AGP card is located closest to the intergrated stuff, LPT port, video, it is usualy brown, the rest of the expansion slot our white, those our pci slots.

AGP Video cards our plentiful, PCI video is hard to come by

Thanks, yesterday when I had it opened I think all I saw were the white PCI slots. I will look again tomorrow. also, I have just looked at some on the net. Is there any difference between a VGA output and a VGA monitor output? I am thinking that these terms are the same.

Hi, not sure if a PC that old would have an AGP slot. If not, you should be able to find a PCI vid card for REALLY cheap.

Just for the heck of it, did you try a diff cable?

AGP slots have been in pc since ATX power supply replaced AT power supply, P2 or better, Celeron came out just after P2

IF unsure...buy a PCI video card. You will also need to go into the BIOS Setup (usually F1, F2 or F10 or DEL key when Gateway logo appears...may take a few tries) and DISABLE the onbourd video.
