Hey folks and thanks for looking at my post. Some of you may have seen another post about a 200XP I was considering. To make a long story short I stopped by another marine dealer on the way to pick it up and bought a 130 HP boat there. I have heard many good things about OMC V-4's through the years and had read some posts from another poster who was considering a 115 so I didn't feel totally blind going in. We tested compression all between 140 and 150. Ran it on hose and it took it a little while to idle but I think he flooded it. Appears to not have been used to much or been worked on as all the bolt heads look untouched. My question is if I do the de-carbon process listed in the FAQ where you use 3/4 gal. gas:1/4 Seafoam should that clean the carbs as well? The boat's last registration sticker was an '02 which probally was bought in '01. I don't feel I have any stuck rings with the compression readings. I am going to change the gear case oil first thing in the morning. What am I forgetting?

If the carbs on that engine have any gummy restrictions, the seafoam will do little to dislodge. My recommendation on an engine that has set out of use for extended time would be to dismantle and clean each carb thouroughly to prevent the possibilty of leaning out a cylinder and doing some serious damage.

I'd also replace the waterpump and T/Stat assys. Then you know where you stand with the cooling sysytem.

Also a set of fresh Champion sparkplugs would be on the shopping list.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. I went to a couple of online parts sites to get impeller and t-stats and could not find my motor listed. they had 115's 135's and 140's but no 130's. Which should i use to order parts, or do they all interchange?

Don't forget to change the gear oil & use fresh gaskets on the fill & vent plugs.

That compression (140-150) seems high to me but I don't know the specs for a 96. Most V4s come in around 105-120.

I took her out today. I cleaned the carbs and sprayed deep creep in the plug holes and ran some through the carbs on a fast idle, I was not able to get enough in there at once to choke it out but I got mucho black stuff on the grass now. Went to the river and opened it up. Not quite the 150 but pretty darn good. According to the speedo the top speed is around 55mph. I sat her down and jumped back took the cowl of as quick as i could and put a hand on each head I could have left them there all day. I did the lower unit when I got back home, it was black as tar and there was a little metal on the magnet, but no signs of moisture, I have seen worse. I put a synthetic blend in (it was a pretty blue color). The only issues today was it died once right after I started it and was idleing out of the marina. And once it seemed the carbs were loaded up when i went to blast after a long no wake zone, (I am not sure i had the motor trimmed all the way down). I found an impeller at my local friendly wrench for $12 and am gonna jump over to surplus unlimited to order a new water pressure gauge when I leave here, on mine the pointer is on the wrong side of the stop post. Thanks for all the help and intrest.

1986....When you say you cleaned the carbs out, does that mean that you took them apart and cleaned and rebuilt them or just sprayed them out with carb cleaner? As for the decarb I wouldn't bother with the seafoam in the gas, I would just use the deep creep a couple more times, I think it works a little better since it is more concentrated. Good luck.

Go ahead and get the rest of the pump kit while youre there. We would not recommend changing the impeller only.

Sounds like you got a good one. Im sure you already know but use Champion plugs only.

Good luck!

On the carbs what i did was pull the bowl drains and flushed them out thoroughly with carb cleaner also checked the end of the drain plugs to see what I was up against. I repeated this process 3 times then put the plugs back in and filled the carbs from the hole in front while holding my finger on the hole in throttle body, then sprayed into the small brass hole on the top. I let this soak for an hour, drained and repeated. The second time around I sprayed carb cleaner from the top till I got perfectly clean carb cleaner out the bottom. Put the drains back in and again filled em. Shot a little TCW3 into the cylinders and bumped the starter, fired right up, I let it run maybe 3 seconds and repeated. The decarbed with deep creep in the cylinders and through the carbs. If it is running good and cool I dont wanna put whench marks on this virgin motor. Why should I?

On the compression I am sure that is what the gauge read but it was his gauge. It did read zero when I pushed the release button. While doing this one of the plug wires got plugged back in and it started on one cylinder, so if you have an idle miss I guess you could unhook 3 at a time and she which one is not running.

Dhadley I will check into getting the whole set when i go out today. He is a long distance call but he is also on the way to the lake.
