Putting outdrive in forward gear After it has been removed?

Hey all!
I have removed my pre-alpha outdrive from my project boat. Since it would not go into forward gear I simply removed the engine first, then removed the outdrive and gimble housing as a unit. (engine was coming out anyway so no biggie).
Now that I have the outdrive off...how do I attempt to put it in forward gear to separate it from the gimble?
I need to dig into this outdrive to see if it's worth saving.

TIA

Push the shift cable while turning the propeller CCW. Once the prop locks, it's fully in forward gear. Just one question... how did you pull the engine out without damaging the coupler? (and you may THINK you didn't, but you did )

I removed the screws holding the front wooden mount block to the stringers, removed the 2 rear mount bolts, and slid the engine forward.
Doesn't really matter if it's damaged, I planned to replace it anyway as it is 38 years old.
