Yes, my granddads motor. Read threads about parts and coil replacement. Dang it I just love the look of this motor. So is that all its good for? Looking. I don't want to throw good money after this one when I also have a CD-14 that needs some love also! Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I've never worked on one of those. WBeaton has and if I recall, the coils are very difficult to find but with some modification, you may be able to use the more modern coils. I believe it's a pain to work on the lower unit as well.
Myself, I'd work on the CD first. I like the looks of those QD-10's but would not fix it, unless it was my granddad's motor. In your case, I'd have to give it a try but would expect to have to round up some parts and plan on putting a lot of time and more than usual money into it.
You can still get original paint and decals for that motor at nymarine.ca
It's fairly fun to look around his site, anyway. :) The paint and such is high, but Peter is a good fellow to do business with and sells good quality stuff. The best, I think. You could always send it to him and let him restore it for you!:D You'd better have some cash, though.

What JBJ says is true. Those coils are long gone. You can either buy a new set of coils and swap the laminations and modify the armature plate to accept the new plug wire position or swap the whole armature plate off of another newer motor. I'm not sure what years will work for that though. Only reason I know it can be done is because I have a running QD-10 with a newer mag.

With that said, JBJ had some trouble with a 1952-53 QD with a different mag. I believe the timing was off as a result. I'm not sure how that turned out in the end.

Hey Wayne,
The flywheel key position is several degrees different on the crankshaft on a '52 compared to a '53, making the timing and mag plate different. I took that good '52 powerhead and put the crank from the '53 in it but haven't gotten around to putting it back on the '53 tower again and testing it out. Right now I'm repainting the '53 GMC.:)
