Need some help with a QD-11 ignition. I replaced the original coils by pressing new ones onto the old armatures, but need to make sure I'm wired up correctly. I beleive each coil should be grounded to the armature plate and the other wire should go to the bar that the capacitor's connected to, correct? When I removed the old coils, one was wired this way, but the other had both wires to the capacitor connecter. Just didn't seem right, can anyone verify what's correct?

One grounded, the other to the points/capacitor. Be sure you ground the correct one, it grounds both the primary and secondary windings. If you are using the universal OMC coils use this picture as a reference. Are you installing them upside-down?

The QD-11 uses a slightly different coil, the laminate stack is longer. I bought the coils in your picture, but removed the coil from the laminate, then re-mounted the coil on the old laminate. As purchased, the laminate stacks were to short, bolt holes wouldn't line up.
I grounded the black wire of each coil, then connected the green wire to the points/capacitor. I'll try to fire her up tonight.

Yes, I assumed that was what you are doing, replacing the highly obsolete 580040 coils. I'm just wondering if you were able to put the new coils on the old laminations in the normal right-side-up orientation, or if you had to turn them upside down?

Re: QD-11 ignition wiring

I mounted them with the plug wire connection up, but there was no clearance to slip a convential plug wire boot over the pin. I removed the plastic shroud around the pin that the plug wire went to, bought wire cored plug wire, stripped the plug wire insulation and wrapped the wire around the pin then covered it with self vulcanizig rubber. Doesn't look nearly as bad as it sounds!

Re: QD-11 ignition wiring

Help me please!! I did the very same thing with the new napa coils part # 18-5181 on my johnson QD-11, 10 H.P.- OK. I cleaned the points, and checked continuity with my Fluke VOM, my points are good. what should the microfarad rating be on the condensors? My came out at about 370 microfarads on cap/condensor. I also connected my new with green wire going to points /cond.

You need to start a new thread jack. It's against forum rules to hijack a thread.

Re: QD-11 ignition wiring

Yes, I believe you're correct. The QD-10 (1949) and QD-11 (1950) have the old style ignition system and the QD-12 (1951) was the first model year that had the later universal style ignition system. If your coils are bad, you can try Sea-Way Marine or you can see about updating your system with a mag plate from the QD-12. I don't know for sure if this would work, but it certainly would be worth a try, should your coils need replacing in the future.
